Castle Park
I had spent some time looking in completely the wrong place on a previous visit to
Glasgow, but could now locate both this ground and near-neighbour Blantyre Celtic's former
ground on the new edition of the Glasgow A-Z Street Atlas. No doubt there had been many an
interesting encounter between the two over the years judging by the defunct club's name
and blue paint at Castle Park!
This is my sort of ground - the three homely covered areas and the rough terracing.
Luckily some club members were marking out the pitch when I arrived, so I was able to gain
access to this superb ground. I was told that the far end cover had recently been removed,
a matter of regret to me that I had not seen it, but of pride to the club. A new building
houses the club facilities on the far side from the cover, but has little to commend it.
The small stand by the corner flag, however, could easily be Junior football's oldest
structure, and reminded me of the stand at my own club's ground. Inside the stand were
small sections placed as if at random, quite unique!
