Non-League Football Grounds Frenzy |

Bromley F.C. |
|
I have fond memories of watching Isthmian
League football at Bromley in the early 1980s - especially an evening fixture against
Tooting & Mitcham. I recall sitting in the stand as it was raining, the smell of
linament rising from the dressing rooms below, and one of the best non-League matches I
have ever seen. Bromley's winger Dave Waight was playing out of his skin and could surley
have made it in the Football League.
Sadly the old wooden stand, with its old teabar at the turnstile end, is no more, replaced
by a modern monstrocity. Functional, yes, and at least the club are still at the ground,
but a poor replacement. Surley the extra few bricks to raise it to a reasonable height
could have been afforded, and why are all such stands the same bland colour? How about a
repaint in black & white?
The rest of the ground is still one of the best in the country at this level. There are
high terraces all round, with both ends covered. One end boasts bench seating, and it was
from this end that I recall seeing a ref stop a game - to remove a spectator using a loud
hailer. The ref had put up with the usual banter but objected to the fan trying to rally
the rest of the crowd against him after a decision he disagreed with!

Bromley's ground is not in Grounds Frenzy - the book... but there are many Top
Grounds which are!
