Baldock Road, Letchworth FC
I visited Baldock Road twice in seven days
during the summer of 1997, just days before the demolition contractors arrived to prepare
the ground for extensive renovations. During my first visit I met the architect who very
proudly showed me his plans, and equally proudly claimed to have been involved in the
design of a number of new grounds. I did not share his enthusiasm for the anonymous
concrete stand which would be unlikely to cause a future hopper to make two visits ever,
not just in the same week!
The stand seen in these photos dates from the 1930s, and made good use of one of my
favourite materials for use on a country stand, corrugated iron. Rust bubbled the
paintwork and weeds sprouted all around, while a leaking pipe dripped at the back of the
stand. As is often the case, it was hard to photograph the stand without floodlight pylons
getting in the way.
One small reminder of the old ground can still be seen, as the turnstile block -
optimistically housing four turnstiles - was due to be renovated and retained.
