Non-League Football Grounds Frenzy |
|
| Welling United's Park View Road ground was formerly home to Bexleyheath & Welling FC. In the early sixties the ground's slope was reduced in a vain attempt to gain League status. | ![]() |
| The ground is very much an old-fashioned venue, backing straight onto Welling High Street. Crowds are often abused by passing bus passengers, but equally fans have witmessed some amazing scenes on the road - often interesting enough to divert attention away from the football! One such incident involved a middle-aged woman clearly the worse for drink kicking in a telephone box then stomping up the road screaming. | ![]() |
| Welling United gained access to the ground in 1977 and within four years were playing Southern League football. A limited amount of ground work was undertaken to gain entry to the Conference - filling in the railings with plywood which survives to this day. | ![]() |
| 'We are none too keen on stripey teams...' - so it must be a bank holiday weekend and Fisher Athletic the visitors. This as always a bruising encounter, and one which is missed as Welling normally came out on top. | ![]() |
| The other major attraction was the visit of Maidstone United, never popular as they took Wings fans' favourite player, and profuse goalscorer, John Bartley almost as soon as the club had won through to the Conference. Bartley holds an amazing goalscoring record of almost a goal a game over a number of seasons. Sadly his brief experience of League football with Millwall saw him played out of position on the wing - why?!! | ![]() |
| The ground's record attendance under Welling's tenure came with the visit of Blackburn Rovers. A crowd of 3850 in January 1989 almost saw a surprise home win as John Glover's header hits the bar when it could so easily have gone in... | ![]() |
| The Park End was securely fenced in during the time of United's Cup runs of the late 80s, and fans on the side terrace taunted their rivals with the waving of wads, Harry Enfield style, accompanied with the singing of 'one job between you...'. | ![]() |

| The levelling of the ground leaves the side terrace somewhat higher than the pitch at the Park End, as seen above. The covered side (above right) is due to be rebuilt as a stand and clubhouse in coming months courtesy of ground-sharers Erith & Belvedere. | ![]() |
| Just to put the record straight, Wings did originate in the nearby Danson Park, but moved to Park View Road from the Butterfly Lane ground in Avery Hill Park, Eltham. This small venue had a clubhouse and railed pitch, adequate for Spartan League football, but no stand. It is still to be found as the club left it , although the railings no longer survive. | ![]() |
